about

NEROLI STATUARY is the confluence of several working methodologies and longstanding influences, a meeting point between melodic ambient albums like STATUETTES, DAUGHTER, ELIDE and TRANSPOSITION GRADIENTS IN CYAN & BURNT ORANGE. In this crossroads, I've assembled a collection of improvisations and generative sequences on the Roland Juno 106 digital polysynth. In July of 2021, the Juno was graciously and unexpectedly given to me as a gift, and NEROLI STATUARY is both the fruit of my initial labor with the machine, and a prosaic letter of thanks to the kind person who made it all possible.

Leading this collection is "White Alice (July 10)" - the very first piece I ever recorded with the Juno - which was ceremoniously released on Lee Norris' Neotantra label as part of a recent compilation, an informal christening of the machine's presence in my work. Following this are several explorations of single patches already present on the Juno, something I sought to keep intact until I could record at least one piece for each one. For those unaware, the Juno can contain 128 patches, so by the logic used here, there will be several more volumes of NEROLI STATUARY to come. (Also, this does not mean I am not designing my own patches yet, but rather, I haven't saved any of them in the Juno's memory at this point in time, but this is not an uncommon practice with many of my machines.)

What you hear on this first volume, then, is equally inspired by perennial staples like SAW II, Roedelius' Selbstportraits and Jochem Paap's FAX albums, as well as taking influence from more Berlin-school ideas, using more arpeggiators as a rhythmic/chordal bed to play monophonic lead lines over - something the Juno does exceptionally well with its six voice polyphony - and, incidentally, Eno's namesake piece invoked here is never very far away either (I say incidentally because NEROLI STATUARY is an anagram and was discovered procedurally). These pieces are either entirely improvised and played by hand, or they've been built out of sequences input on an Arturia Keystep Pro that the Keystep then pulls apart probabilistically according to internal randomization engines with their own curves and logics. Both approaches are necessary in order to fully maximize the Juno's potential range on any given patch, and often where one method does not work, the other will. In this way, the Juno possesses a distinct personality that gently guides your workflow according to its own sensibilities, and many times over it ends up feeling as if the machine is playing itself.

The pieces offered here are not intended to each feel wholly remarkable, but hopefully form a more cogent fullness when they can all be considered together. Aside from a single reverb or delay effect on any given track, and selective parametric equalization, everything you hear on NEROLI STATUARY comes from the Juno alone. It felt seasonally appropriate to release after Autumn arrived fully, and I hope it lends a subtle color and texture to your Autumn days or nights (or both), as it has been an unexpected passenger with me since I've finalized it.
