  • Limited Edition CD-R [Rare Out Of Print I, Absentee Edition]
Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

Found three copies stashed away in a box while unpacking from the move. This is the lovely looking factory-printed I, Absentee edition of New Drugs, with the softcore photos on the album art and the extra tracks. 100 copies were produced in 2009, and the album has only just recently been put back in print at Milieu Music. A very special artifact!

**NOTE: The items listed in the back catalog sale have all been found while unpacking. Some of them have been packed away for years in storage, and may have small imperfections. These are being sold as is, as the artifacts they are, to raise money for implementing the new studio. No refunds will be given.

  • New Drugs [Ultra-Rare 2007 Promo / Archive Copy]
Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

More artifacts unearthed while unpacking and moving into the new studio! I've found four copies of this New Drugs promo disc - these were sent to distributors and given out at live events around the time of the original album's release in 2007. They are packaged in a white cardboard jacket and have the sticker on the front, with a plain white disc inside. I seem to recall these were assembled as promos because we ended up with more of the back cover stickers than the front cover stickers. A cool find for the Milieu collector who might just have/want everything! (The download that accompanies this item is the Lux Ex reissue version with 20 tracks - please note that this CD-R only contains the original pre-remastered album!)

about

New Drugs, when I conceived it, was many things. At least, it was intended to be. Whether or not it currently exists within any of my original contexts is unknown and, for the moment, irrelevant. At the time, it was a line drawn in the sand, where there was clearly music that came before and then this. Something about it seemed special, a little magical, to the degree that I hadn't felt this strongly about a record I made since Slow Lid Close. This was, to my ears, the pinnacle of the original Milieu sound. The chopped up drum breaks from old jazz, funk and hip hop LPs that I'd introduced on In Hills Made Of Clouds. The tight and "in the pocket" basslines from Slow Lid. The balanced yet pronounced drum machine voices from Our Blue Rainbow. The psychedelic smear melodies and cassette warp textures from all over the Milieu catalog. It was drafted in sexual and substance abusing symbolism, yet presented with the sincerity of a family photo album. The parts of New Drugs are indeed unique and individualistic, but I happen to feel they really do serve the greater whole, and that the album is itself an entity, a body, with happy, sad and bittersweet memories all its own.

I took New Drugs with me to Germany in 2007, when I performed at Lab 30. It was very much by my side when I went from never having flown on a plane before to soaring across the sea and spiraling down over so many little gingerbread house rooftops. The album actually preceded my arrival there, as I found out when I went into two different shops and heard it playing. Again, something special about it, and I can never quite say just what it is. Perhaps it is the fact that, for all its conceptual and aesthetic wrapping, the music on New Drugs is almost totally without pretense. It exists as immediate and feel-good pop music, both ornamental form and utilitarian function, built to last across a thousand hot summers.

So here it is again, in its third incarnation, nine years after its original issue date and almost ten years after the sessions themselves. Another pretty package of sunsets for sale, from me to you.
