about

Of The Apple was the second ambient album I created for the triptych of Milieu / Of The Apple / Sun White Sun in 2006, and perhaps the most unique. In addition to the guitar and organ format for the instruments, a couple tracks actually contain (distant, nearly imperceptible) rhythms, and after David Tagg and I created Second Sun Recordings to house our work as VCV and Viking Destroyer, we agreed that Of The Apple would be an appropriate thing for SSR to issue. A factory-pressed digipack CD (still a minority among the dozens of CD-Rs in my catalog) was drafted and as a special send-off, David and I collaborated on a fifteen-minute piece that was made to bring the curtain down on the album. Considering that Coppice Halifax was forging through its first year as an entity at the same time Of The Apple was recorded, it should be no surprise that the OTA pieces containing deep rhythms somewhat resemble early Coppice Halifax material (such as "Bronze" from 1983). Stylistically, OTA is also unique in that it feels far more "composed" than its bookended counterparts - evidence that I was hitting a very pleasant stride with my computer-free setup and actually exploring new ground. The improvisation is still omnipresent, but there seems to be more...discernment, when it comes down to what ended up on the tape. Almost everything on OTA is live and without overdubs, the exceptions being "Stone Chapel / Statuettes 2" and the closing track with David Tagg. The concept of OTA was solidified well before I ever recorded it - a series of pleasant and surreal dreams I was having in 2003-2004 gave me the impetus to record something with this specific atmosphere, even though I was unable to fully realize it until 2006. Today, perhaps because of the melodic quality of the album, or even because it got a factory pressed release years ago, Of The Apple remains a favorite of fans, which makes me beam with happiness every time someone writes to tell me how much it means to them. Like Sun White Sun, I've elected to leave Of The Apple untouched in the mastering department, as it think it still sounds as perfect as it was when I completed it almost ten years ago. Instead, I have gone back to the original session tapes as source and derived a massive Coppice Halifax remix of "Oceans", taking a full 70+ minutes to explore its depths.
