The long-stalled fifth volume of Plangent Liqueurs - Blue Green Bedroom Subtropic - arrives at the perfect time, at the terminus point of a long, weird Summer. Like the fourth volume, being concurrently issued, volume five revisits many landmarks from past identities and events, assembled here and remastered to perform as a cohesive and narrative whole. "Surrounded By Pigments" and "Majik Melter" sound plucked out of sessions for New Drugs and Colortone, while "Ties Crews Emerging" could have been a Bell'n Dither outtake. There are beautifully serene moments present here, such as the oceanic missive of "Sounds From Shattered Seashells" or the late-night ashtray jazz of "Deliver", and there are hyper-colorful manic jams that offset this calmness to a devastating rave-out effect, as on "Oh Karelia", "Faith" and "Harmonic Ambiguity." The closing cut, "Meadows", presages Coppice Halifax in many ways, especially considering how transparent I've been through the years in admitting that Ourson's Warming Plant and Specimen Four Billion were instrumental in CH even being brought into existence (I will even go a step further and say for the record that 1983 was a response to Warming Plant, at the time). Perhaps most prescient of all is "Arcus Current", which today feels as if it is some kind of Sun Cast preamble to my ears. Altogether, these Plangent Liqueurs bring back a flood of vivid memories, friends and studios, and it is nice to once again have them published here in such a fashion.
*EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm aware that all of these tracks, while being my work, exist with the original artists' names on them. Since it's been up to sixteen years ago now, I have long since lost my contacts with many of these very cool musicians. SO, if one of you has found this release and wants a copy for your contribution to it, PLEASE get in touch with me. It would be great to catch up anyway.
