"The mural was always his landmark, a mental metric to measure other distances against, relative to how close they were to it. It was a mundane painting of an old steamboat on the river that ran beside it, perhaps historic at one time, but now just a sun-baked wall of eroded paint. It had become totemic, almost a natural part of the landscape, rather than something an artist would have once toiled over, and it comforted him. He ran his palm across the faded blue of the painted river water, once a deeper navy, now worn down to a nearly baby blue. The sun was here too, hiding within the wall, sleeping underneath the mural. He thought he'd like that - it seemed like a beautiful place to be still, and it had only taken him most of his life to appreciate the need for stillness, the concrete importance of doing nothing."
