about

"Let all whom the sea loveth
Come to its altar front
And I
Who can offer no other sacrifice to thee
Bring this."

-H.D., excerpt from 'Hermonax' (1914)

'In Dark Waves' is the twenty-second Sleepbuilding session to be published online for free. It was originally broadcast overnight on March 17th, 2023, and explores the Dorian scale with the voice of the waveshaping VCO inside Expert Sleepers' Disting Mk4 multipurpose module.

A languorous meditation, 'In Dark Waves' contemplates the solitude of a quiet evening in, perhaps with cold wind blowing outside, and feels apt to be published now when Winter brings the sun down so much earlier in the day. Like a handful of other sessions in this series before it, 'In Dark Waves' does not contain much in the way of developed melodic interest, nor does it feel particularly memorable, but rather, this is part of the point in exploring long runtimes as a compositional process - sometimes, the gravity of something can only be made apparent when it is operatively endless, woven into the air as a part of the listener's physical surroundings, thickening the darkness in a warm bedroom.

It is intended less as music in any traditional sense (and certainly, those of you looking for a traditional listening experience would be advised to search elsewhere) and more as an aural fabric, or perhaps a temperature and a texture combined by way of acoustic vibration and synaesthetic coloration. If my melodic and composed work could be represented visually with a marble plinth, then recordings like 'In Dark Waves' are the space around it.

As always, your mileage may vary, and what works for me here in this tangential self-care ritual may not make a whole lot of logical sense to you. Being a free download, I would still encourage any curious listeners to take the chance and see where 'In Dark Waves' might carry them, because for all of these empty airwaves pulsating in the dark, there must be *something* inside them that moves around, and as someone who feels just as much a passenger in these vessels as you do, being able to admit that I cannot define things, even after I have arguably created them, feels like a worthwhile consideration all by itself.
