about

'Mural Hex' is, as the name implies, a sixth track from the 'River Mural' sessions in 2022. It was an outtake at that time, and upon the recent remastering of that album (forthcoming in April), it was rediscovered as a Milieu track that emerged from a Coppice Halifax recording process.

In the wake of 'Watch the Head' the abandoned remnants were recontextualized, augmented by newer parts and constructed into the new EP before you now. The track is a kind of showcase for the Korg Poly 800 polysynth, which I acquired in December, and this machine plays all the basslines that lead the song through the various polymetric sections. Supporting the Poly 800 are a number of other digital synthesizers - GForce's remake of the Oberheim SEM and Waldorf's PPG Wave VST as well as staple 6-operator FM and Karplus-Strong synths from other Milieu albums.

During the mastering process for 'Mural Hex' I unexpectedly found all the pieces were present for a Coppice Halifax dub as well, and across a couple stoned evenings, put this alternate take together to be included here. This cut was built with the same machines as the original mix, with the addition of the MS-2 three operator FM synthesizer and some drum parts designed on my modular system.

The EP closes with a beatless reprise of the title track, which isolates all of the non-rhythmic and non-bass elements from 'Mural Hex' and routes them through a granular resampling system, with the resultant audio being played over with new parts on the SEM and Poly 800, and further developed into a new composition that still echoes the original at a more subconscious level.
