about

"Each of us like you
has died once,
has passed through drift of wood-leaves,
cracked and bent
and tortured and unbent
in the winter-frost,
the burnt into gold points,
lighted afresh,
crisp amber, scales of gold-leaf,
gold turned and re-welded
in the sun;

each of us like you
has died once,
each of us has crossed an old wood-path
and found the winter-leaves
so golden in the sun-fire
that even the live wood-flowers
were dark."

-H.D., excerpt from 'Adonis'

'Aeolian Yellow' is the 23rd Sleepbuilding broadcast to be published here for free, as all prior entries in that series have been. It totals about fourteen hours of runtime, exploring the Aeolian scale through the voice of the Buchla 258t dual-oscillator and the extensive signal-processing veins of the R-EW Audioholistics modular system.

The Ohioan Winter we're still in the midst of has seemed to, this time, be very mild, with only two significant snowfalls giving way to much more rain and sleet instead. As I type this now, it already feels like Spring is advancing fast upon us, much earlier than it should be, and for this reason I have chosen 'Aeolian Yellow' as the aural counterpart to what is certainly an uncharacteristic February in the midwest - full with the sensation that this warmth is some kind of artifice, or perhaps a side-effect of an unseen process that is changing the world. Sarcastically, I wonder aloud what that process might be?

Still, we can only ever exist in the place and time we're thrust into - we do not get to ask or choose - and it follows that for my part in this, I prefer to focus on the things that I can choose, the areas of my life and the world around me that I can change. Sessions such as this one have drawn a continuous line through my time on this planet, expressing (if nothing else) my contentment in wanting to share the mechanisms that bring me joy and comfort.

'Aeolian Yellow' reminds me, at times, of previous Milieu albums like 'Beyond the Sea/Stars' at Infraction, which emerged as far back as eighteen years ago now, perhaps illustrating how little my tastes have changed in the palette of sound I like to explore - or even more possible, how little my tastes are even able to change, beyond the momentary and topical.

Whether it is one or the other - a fixed conclusion in my brain's design, or something more mutable, changed imperceptibly by factors I cannot determine - the result is still clearly the same. My work, as offered here, is "always returning" as Eno once said, always fulfilling the same role in my life, and this can only lead me to speculate that while I may be able to offer you the fruits of my creative process as a method of putting positive change into the world around me, this process is in and of itself somewhat unable to be changed, and I am not the originator or director of this process, but merely another part of it.
