about

(This is SIDE A)

'Dusk Maps' is, at its core, a session of recordings from January of 2021, which was focused on loop studies using the Casio MT-210 "Pulse Code Modulation" synthesizer in conjunction with a Boss RC-20 looper, a Peavey PVDJ Grabber and FX2 mixer with custom DSP FX. This session was enjoyable and plans were made for it to be released, but kept slipping away as things like Vibratelepathos took precedence. In the time since, I've attempted to revisit the material in overdubbing capacities, always ending up somewhere so far removed from the loops themselves that the original session remained unused once again.

Finally, as Summer of '23 waned and gave way to a gorgeous quiet Autumn here in Ohio, I happened upon the perfect application/exploration of these recordings, using granular processors, fast Fourier transforms and other transformative means, allowing two distinct halves of a whole to emerge like flowers that have finally bloomed. They are warm, and sun-kissed, but not bathed in a Summer heat, and there is a subtle fluttering movement beneath their placid surfaces, which reminds me of the leaves trembling across the green grass as Autumn breezes through the valley.

So, 'Dusk Maps' arrives in two variations, which could be taken as volumes one and two, or sides A and B, but to my mind, they are more like 'NW Age' in how they both present a slightly different perspective on the same subject matter, reflecting each other at times, and augmenting each other at times. Topically speaking, these recordings would appeal to fans of 'cozy' minimal ambient albums such as 'Elide' and 'The Synthesist's Alphorn Retreat' while also recalling shades of my warm guitar stasis on SSR albums like 'The Loneliness of Empty Roads' or EPs from the 21MG Series, even though they are not guitar music, or organ music, while somehow timbrally resembling both in different moments.

However you approach these recordings, I hope they offer an easy and accessible listening experience that isn't really concerned with anything in particular - a pleasant sense of being still, inert and emptied. There is a lot of movement and overwhelming information in the world today, and my 'Dusk Maps' are something that may offer some shelter. Please be well, take care of yourselves, and remember to slow down and rest.
