about

"The Severn Bore" was originally broadcast live on the evening of September 25th, 2023, an ambient after-set following the release party for "Watch the Head." It was thematically intended to expand on the atmosphere at the end of the penultimate track on "Watch the Head" - 'Nodens Monolith' - and offer a wider panoramic image of a seashore just barely within view from a Roman ruin in a forest grove, perhaps gazing further out to sea at a small island formation, wondering what might be there.

It also branches from 'Nodens Monolith' in that both compositions use the Dorian scale, albeit with "The Severn Bore" exploring that scale via the Buchla 200 system rather than a digital FM synthesizer as on 'Nodens,' and the relationship between both pieces is further solidified by the presence of ocean waves - a field recording on 'Nodens' and here, a synthesized approach using pink noise generators and multiple independently modulated/panned bandpass filters.

As usual, all of this technical information about the work offers hardly any insight into what it sounds like. "The Severn Bore" feels lonesome and isolated, filled with longing for something that may yet still arrive or happen, but by the end of its considerable runtime, does not. It exists alongside the Sleepbuilding series of long-form generative broadcasts, but sits apart from them in its deliberation and thematic design, a landscape painting that scores the backdrop for another album. Still, traces of Sleepbuilding remain in this piece - I have very carefully hidden Frantisek Kupka in the modulation of the cover art - and "The Severn Bore" can be utilized for waking and sleeping purposes, and most states between, just as the Sleepbuilding sessions can.

Once again, I'd like to offer my sincere thanks to everyone who listens to my work, and supports it in any capacity. "The Severn Bore" is a piece of music that would not exist if it were not for the attendees of the release party, and I always appreciate you being there.
